The Portrait Process

1. Contacting Coppertone Studios

The first step to getting your Coppertone Studios portraits is to contact us. We are easily reached via or telephone (651-222-1329). During this step, we will help you decide on a shooting time, ask how you heard about us, and discuss what you have in mind for portraiture.

  • Do you want to shoot at our studio, your home, or some other location? We're happy to travel (especially for longer sessions), and love shooting outside.
  • What kind of portraiture will we be shooting? Glamour, boudoir, hardcore, classical, victorian?
  • What times of day / week you're available.
  • Who will be involved? Will the session be solo, couple, or group portraiture?
  • Why are you taking these photos? Are they a gift for someone? Who is your audience?

2. Before your shoot

Once we've scheduled a shooting time, there's not much to do until the shoot. We have a whole set of before your shoot tips for you to read during the meantime. On the day of the shoot, remember to bring everything you need, or set up whatever we will be shooting. We love taking unique portraits, and if you have props or toys, bring them along!

3. During the Shoot

When you arrive at the studio, or we arrive at the shooting location, we'll take some time to get ready. We have to set up lights, arrange backgrounds, and take some test pictures. Then we'll spend a few minutes getting comfortable, and making sure that you're relaxed and ready to shoot. Usually, we put on some music (your choice), and if you're at the studio, we always have drinks and snacks available.

We always work as a team, and usually take turns shooting. We're constantly thinking of new ideas while we're shooting, and that makes every shoot unique. If we try some ideas and they aren't working, or you don't like how the shots are turning out, we'll just move onto another pose or scene. At any time, feel free to ask us to show you what we're shooting.

4. Afterwards

Usually within two weeks, we will provide your photos to you on CD or DVD, or in whatever format you've specified. We will always give you all the negatives for your shoot (even the blurry ones!) unless you ask otherwise, or you have selected the Basic Package. On the disc, you will find many different folders, including those for negatives, print-resolution (for printing) and web-quality (lower in size, for web use). You will also find a folder of the photos on which we have worked our "darkroom magic." If you want to select the pictures you want us to retouch yourself, we can also provide a proof cd within a few days of the shoot instead (or simply choose them there), and a cd after everything is complete.

We also provide other services including on-line picture hosting, and photo prints, for additional fees. All payment is due on receipt of the final disc (or other medium), unless we work out other options, and we accept cash, check, or barter as payment options.

We love hearing your comments about our work. After the shoot, we will contact you to ask you about your experience.
